Introducing Grace, our newest team member

Grace is studying Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire. In between her studies she is supporting MFMM on our Care Home project and research work.
Tell us a bit about you and how you came to study psychology

My name is Grace Plummer, and I’m a second-year student currently studying psychology at the university of Hertfordshire.

I have always been fascinated by the intricacies of human behaviour and the profound impact it has on our lives. This curiosity led me to pursue psychology at degree level, driven by the realisation of how applicable it is to everyday life.

My passion for psychology inspired me to take online courses such as ‘CBT and Depression’ and ‘The Developing Mind’, enriching my knowledge and expanding my skill set.

In essence, psychology has given me a new perspective on life and continues to be a source of growth and understanding.

"I find myself continually drawn to understanding more about the human mind. Listening to podcasts and hearing others' stories deepens my intrigue and fuels my desire for further exploration."
Why did you want to volunteer for Music for my Mind?

Firstly, I realised the profound impact that music can have on people in various ways. The unique concept of MFMM was something I hadn’t encountered before, and I was intrigued by its potential to make a difference. Witnessing how it not only enhances the lives of individuals with dementia but also provides opportunities for connection between them and their caregivers and family members deeply moved me.

Additionally, I saw volunteering as an opportunity to expand my understanding of dementia, recognising its significant impact globally.

Most importantly, I was drawn to the chance to positively impact people’s lives, utilising the power of music to bring comfort and joy.

Would you like to share any personal experiences with music and dementia?

Plato’s quote, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything,” resonates deeply with me, as it highlights the profound impact of music on our lives. Through my own application of music, I have realised how my musical ability can influence other peoples’ lives and enhance their happiness alongside how I use it to relax and organise my thought processes.

Learning the piano at six ignited a love that only grew as I began writing songs and discovering my singing voice through performances in dance and drama groups.

Joining a band, performing locally, and engaging in community musical activities enriched my experience, while opportunities to work in recording studios and participate in competitions like Teenstar expanded my horizons.

Achieving a GCSE in music and pursuing advanced studies in drama, performing arts, and music in college allowed me to develop my understanding and appreciation for music.
