Transforming dementia care through personalised playlists
We believe music is more than entertainment – it’s a lifeline. For people living with memory loss and dementia, familiar songs can unlock memories, reduce anxiety, and spark moments of connection that other care approaches often miss.
Our mission is simple: to bring personalised playlists to every family affected by dementia, using technology, research, and compassion to make it happen.
Why we exist
Memory loss affects over a million people in the UK, and while a cure for dementia remains elusive, music offers something powerful right now: relief.
We use technology to create personalised playlists based on an individual’s background, preferences, and life history. These playlists aren’t just enjoyable—they’re therapeutic. Familiar melodies can:
- Reduce depression and anxiety
- Rekindle recognition and emotional connection
- Restore relationships and improve quality of life
Our Playlist Maker is free to use and designed to be accessible to families, carers, and care homes alike.
Jean's story
Jean moved into a care home in June 2024. She had become withdrawn and struggled to communicate with those around her. As part of our care home project, Jean participated in tailored music sessions. When a Perry Como song played—one she and her husband Charlie used to listen to on car journeys—Jean turned to him and said: “You haven’t lost me. I’m still here and I love you.”
It was the first time in months she had meaningfully connected with him. Since using her playlist, care staff have observed Jean becoming noticeably happier, more engaged, and less anxious.
Jean’s story is one of many. It’s a reminder that music can reach places words cannot.
Our impact
We’re proud of the difference we’re making – and we’re just getting started.
- Our free-to-use Playlist Maker has helped over 1,000 families.
- 95% of survey respondents report a mood boost, and 89% feel less anxious.
- In care homes 86% showed increased quality of life and 83% saw a drop in neuropsychiatric symptoms.
- Developing AI that analyses facial expressions and body language to refine playlists.
- Recognised nationally – we’re part of the National Centre of Excellence for Training in Music and Dementia.
These numbers reflect real lives changed – and they fuel our commitment to keep going.
Looking ahead
We’re committed to expanding our reach and have ambitious plans to:
• Double the number of Playlist Maker users through partnerships with leading charities and care providers
• Refine and launch our AI-powered app to better understand emotional responses to music and personalise playlists even further
• Build more strong research partnerships to establish personalised playlists as a standard in dementia care.
