The Reminiscence Bump
In order to create personalised music playlists tailored for people living with dementia, this study aimed to determine the age at which healthy individuals could best recall music that was popular at the time. Our team conducted an online survey, which presented a random selection of 10 of the 100 most popular songs from each year of the music charts, between 1945 and 2015, presented in random order.
The results showed that popular music was best recalled when people were aged between 13 and 19 years, regardless of their year of birth. Music from this “reminiscence bump” provides a rich source of retained music that should be tapped when creating playlists of meaningful music for people living with dementia, who may not be able to recall the names of their favourite songs.
